It has always been my dream to interview and feature fellow Filipinos, who have not only been successful in making money online, but also in helping other Filipinos to work and achieve their own success.
This month, my dream is finally realized. I conducted an interview with one of the successful Filipino writers and online business owners – Mr. Jayson Gueverra. Jayson is the owner of the website www.SEOFilipino.com. It is one of the websites that I found very helpful when I was starting out in discovering the internet as a tool for making money and its myriads of other potentials.
In this post, we get to see the inner workings of Jayson Guevarra – what he does, what he treasures, his successes and challenges, and a glimpse of his personal life.
IRENE:Can you please share with us what is your usual day like?
JAYSON: For you to know the context of how I earn online, I am a freelancer providing services to clients, the online business owners. You may be able to understand this craft like that of a doctor with a clinic AND like a vulcanizing boy who operates a shop – both must have clients to be profitable. The distinction goes on like this – the doctor IS NOT WILLING to fix tires and the shop operator DOES NOT HAVE THE SKILL to do what the doctor does… An online freelancer must be both skilled and willing to do hard legwork.
Well, if one learns the ropes, the legwork will not be very difficult at all.
To answer your question, I really do not follow a strict schedule.
Usually, on Mondays, my mornings are dedicated to checking my clients’ projects, sending out reports and recommendations, and listing stuff I needed done for the week. Monday afternoons are for delegating tasks to my team (including my wife) and part-time outsourcers. Monday evenings are for analyzing the projects I handle, including how my own websites perform.
Everyday, I set aside at least one hour to do any of each or all of the following activities:
* text chat or video chat with website owners or company CEO’s
* evaluation of the tasks delegated to others
* scouting new projects which may interest me
* online socialization – which includes answering emails and posting to Facebook
* playing with my son (I do this once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once before going to bed, daily)
* playing a game in my laptop
I cook whenever my wife wants to eat a dish she cannot cook as well as I do.
(Wife: Ang yabang naman!) Usually, I do the cooking on weekend lunchtimes. I spend time social drinking with relatives and friends once or twice a month. Sundays are meant for going to Mass with my wife and son, and buying groceries (although I am beginning to like shopping on weekdays).
IRENE: Can you explain to us what your home based job/business entails?
JAYSON: I started out my online career as a writer or web content producer. My small successes as a very good writer opened me to the world of Search Engine Optimization, which I call “Where 95% of Online Income is Located”. The larger amount of my earnings are coming from my being an all-around provider of SEO services – what I offer include all major aspects of website promotions or Internet Marketing, and I only keep doing the things (and improve these) which have generated the best and long-term results for me and my clientele.
Currently, I am in a transition period – I realized that with some smart work coupled with hard work, I may be able to open up earning possibilities to a great number of Filipinos, our countrymen. I have devised a system which any Filipino, who has had a decent college education, can use (one may start even without excellent English writing skills). I put up a website as a center or training hub where Pinoys and Pinays may get their training, and at the same time, this is where International online business owners may recognize the credibility of the training of the Filipino SEO providers. Whew! That may be the technicalities of my system, but here is a simplified outline of what I am trying to accomplish:
(a) I train people to do SEO services, and these people earn money working online, with me or with projects awarded solely to them
(b) the people I initially trained, when they have the knowledge, experience & capital, will create & market their own websites – at the same time, I will be training new people to replace the “graduates” of my training, to help me in doing SEO work for my exclusive clients
(c) the same people who have been converted into online business owners will have the capability to do SEO for their own websites, OR they will have the option to get services from my other trainees (those who are still doing outsource work for me to gain knowledge, experience & capital)
As you notice, the process is cyclical and I expect it to last until the world does not need the Internet anymore.
Obviously, my clients do not have to worry that this kind of process is happening. I take full responsibility – it is just I am doing something to multiply my efforts and serve more than the usual number I can attend to. For projects I directly handle, my tasks are to evaluate outputs and provide over-delivery where and when necessary.
Think about it this way… In the Philippines, there are graduates of elite universities, and these graduates use the credibility of these great academic institutions for higher rates of landing good-paying jobs. That is my intention… that Filipinos be able to arm themselves with my credibility – in the absence of experience or portfolio, a Kababayan may just say, “I am trained by Jayson Guevarra himself,” and be awarded the opportunity to prove her worth.
IRENE: A lot of aspiring Internet marketers are interested on what is the secret to succeed in Internet marketing?
JAYSON: First, how do you measure success? Sorry for the cliche question.
Well, I claim that there really is no secret. I apologize again. I realized that a lot of people are amazed in what the Internet can do, and so they tend to look for something which is not really there. I have detailed my simplified version of how earning online works via this webpage:
http://www.seofilipino.com/pinoyproviders/about-online-earning
Okay, so you are not yet satisfied.
Here are the elements – THE HEART AND SOUL – of the system I use which have helped me become closer to the success I am after (I am not there yet, just on the way) :
(c) Stop Selling, Solve Something, Start Serving! (The 6 S Principle) – alam mo na, na dapat kang mag-over-deliver, meron ka na nung products/items na magagamit mo sa actual over-delivery mo (ito iyong re-investment), kung kaya ang last and most important step… ay maipaliwanag mo sa clients na meron kang maitutulong sa kanilang projects, na meron kang mahalagang contribution… itong 6 S Principle ang siyang dapat pairalin mo sa paggawa mo ng cover letters, follow up letters, at sa anumang related sa iyong online career
IRENE: What were some of the hardships you went through? How did you overcome these challenges?
JAYSON: I may describe my biggest obstacle as swimming against the current.
I grew up in a community where “Internet business” means owning a computer shop which provides users access to Internet. People either do not believe me blatantly, or just think I am joking about earning online – they have little or no knowledge at all about the multitude of ways the Internet is utilized, so most stick to what they know.
And what a lot of people usually know is just to follow that age-old formula of getting good grades in school, landing a high-paying “regular” job, start investing in something and then retire rich. The formula also means that if you cannot retire rich, at least invest in something… or if you cannot invest yet, at least go for a “regular” job… or if you cannot land that job, at least get good grades… or…?
Maybe you already see what I mean.
The most painful part here is… the people I am talking about are the same people I care for – my friends, the community I serve, my relatives, my own mother, my wife. It is quite good that things already changed. I cannot blame them and will not do so even if I may have good reasons. Why? Because all of us are raised that way – believing a formula which has once been very effective.
However, the rules of the game have obviously changed.
I believe that the only thing which remains helpful in that “formula” given to us is: equip yourself with good education. Getting high grades should not be the main focus. A close friend of mine who helped me become business-minded (and very open-minded) told me that schools are there so we would learn – learn enough, be equipped enough, to takle life’s battles and conquer them.
In the blog area of my main website, I address these issues via the category “Culture Shock”.

IRENE: What advice can you give for those who want to make money online? For those who want to work from home?
If you want a hardcore business tip, I would like to share this with you (this is not my original): “There are only two things beneficial to any business – (a) product creation and development; and (b) marketing. All others are expenses.”
Irene: Any inspiring story you’d like to share? Websites that may help achieve our goals?
I believe I have shared a lot of stories throughout this interview! lol.
I would highly recommend three resources…
First, to help you achieve your goal in any endeavor, you may download this free ebook (this is not written by me, but I have exchanged messages with the writer already):
http://seofilipino.com/exclusive/7_keys.pdf
Another thing, if you want to learn more about becoming a successful online freelancer, or why providing freelance services online is the best way to earn steady cash working from home, I suggest you send me an email personally to get the free ebook I have written myself (this one is written in conversational Filipino).
My ebook contains stuff I have learned and confirmed in the Internet Marketing industry since 2007, and also offers an exclusive, paid training. For 50 readers or subscribers of your blog, Irene, I am willing to give them full access to the paid training without cost. They just have to email me and I will give them additional instructions.
And last but certainly not the least, I would personally tell everyone to subscribe to your blog, Irene, and learn enough, and then actually do something – many things at times – to achieve their goals.
This statement is the perfect way to end this heart-warming, inspiring, and witty responses from Jayson himself. His story is indeed a living proof that success comes for those who desire and work for it. Not only did he share his passion for helping fellow Filipinos, but he also shares to us the importance of his family. I believe that working from your home can truly bring your family a lot closer and can also create a great support system. I think that this is one of best perks of working from home.
I feel lucky and blessed for getting the chance to know one of the many Filipinos who have had tremendous success in the online business. I hope that this interview has inspired you as much as it has inspired me. No matter what your goals are this year and in the years ahead, whether you want to be rich from an online business or you want to be the best home based worker in your chosen field, always believe that you can achieve them. With hard work, patience, and consistency, there is no doubt that you will succeed.
